BEHIND THE SUN

Our icon is a medieval sun, redrawn from the Flammarion engraving, an anonymous wood engraving first published in 1888. That original work portrayed a traveller reaching the ends of the earth, and poking his head through to new realms of imagined futures.

The sun conveys the core of what we do. Night and day. Earthly and cosmic. We create worlds, and worlds revolve around the sun.

INTERVIEW, GARY GORROW
. SOMA BYRON

Friend of THE WORLD OF, Gary Gorrow, brings a deep well of wisdom to his transformative work as a Vedic Meditation teacher and Ayurvedic Health Coach. As the visionary behind SOMA—a renowned retreat nestled in Byron Bay—Gorrow merges ancient practices with contemporary mindfulness, guiding others toward profound self-awareness and holistic well-being.

Earlier this year, THE WORLD OF retreated into a moment of stillness with Gary, who offered profound insights into the essence of his philosophy, emphasising the sacred connection between mind and body. "The most precious thing I have is my physical body," he reflects, "It's on loan, and without it, I wouldn't be here." His teaching, rooted in ancient Ayurvedic wisdom, invite a journey inward, exploring the boundless potential of mindfulness and the transformative power of stillness.

THE WORLD OF

What's your name, and what do you do for a living?

GARY GORROW

My name is Gary Gorrow, and what do I do for a living? I do so many different things. The foundation of what I do is teach people how to meditate, that's where it began for me. I run retreats, I do workshops, I do personal mentoring and mindset training. It's working a lot with the inner development of the human being.

THE WORLD OF

What’s big in your world right now?

GARY GORROW

There are a few things... firstly my kids, Leela and Matisse. They are 15 and 12 and I'm enjoying watching them blossom and grow. Secondly the transformational work I do at Soma, it continues to be a source of inspiration. Thirdly, Joy is a big one. I'm always working towards being more joyful and connected. It is easy to be that way when all is flowing in accordance with one's thoughts and desires, but is conversely difficult when the demands of life reach a fever pitch. So I endeavour to work on refining my mindset and being more playful with it all.

What’s your most precious possession?

GARY GORROW

That's such a good question, especially for someone like me who has spent a decent amount on the spiritual path, which includes to some extent letting go of attachment to material things. Having said that the answer would be, the most precious thing I have is my physical body, it's on loan and without it I wouldn't be here, so I'm immensely grateful for that gift and I try to nourish it accordingly. The body is followed closely by my surfboard, which affords me the delight to ride on water.

THE WORLD OF

Name an artist not enough people are talking about?

GARY GORROW

That would have to be my brother Steve Gorrow. He is phenomenally talented; I've watched him my whole life and been in awe of his creativity. I've seen his artwork evolve and evolve. I'm absolutely loving his latest works. You can see for yourself on Instagram @stevegorrow. His creations also feature on the walls and grounds of Soma.

What's something the world needs more of?

GARY GORROW

The world needs to be more connected to the heart. If we lived as a heart-connected people, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do to each other or the environment the way we do. Wars would end, and it would be a very different human experience. I think we are overly dominated by our rational, logical thinking minds, which become overwhelmed and project so far into the future that we forget the beauty and joy in the process of living. I think our hearts are the superpower we have, and I often think about that.

THE WORLD OF

Name an artist / artwork / film that changed your mind or tell us about a conversation that changed your mind.

GARY GORROW

I remember the first time I saw the Matrix it completely blew my mind. It was the first of its kind with that standard of special effects, but what further captured me was the depth of wisdom contained within that film. I remember walking out of the cinema and the world looked and felt so different.

THE WORLD OF

Where do you think of your best ideas?

GARY GORROW

My best ideas come in moments when there’s a gap. Most of the time, our minds are occupied—living on screens or engaging with people. It’s when my mind is breathing, not being pulled by anything or anyone—on a long-distance drive, walking in nature, or any time when nothing is biting at me—that I tend to find a flow of consciousness and ideas come. Before I started meditation, it would often come just before falling asleep at night, in that window between wakefulness and deep sleep. But since I started meditation, that stream of consciousness has become more available during waking times, often in a daydream or expanded state.

THE WORLD OF

What's an unfulfilled desire of yours?

GARY GORROW

To meet my soul mate.

THE WORLD OF

How would your best friend describe you?
